Guides

Trade sale, management buyout or family succession?

A plain-English guide to the main routes out of a private business, and what each asks of you.

By Exit Index ·

There is no single right way to leave a business. The best route depends on what you want: the highest price, a clean break, or protecting the people and name you have built.

Trade sale

Selling to another business, often a competitor or a larger group. It can deliver the highest price, but buyers will expect thorough due diligence and may ask you to stay on for a period.

Management buyout

Selling to your existing team. Continuity is strong, but the team usually needs outside funding, and part of the price is often paid over time.

Family succession

Passing the business to the next generation. It needs early planning, honest conversations and specialist tax advice.

Whichever route you consider, take professional advice before you commit.
